    Structure, the history, charm of Marugame Castle

    Marugame Castle is a castle (Flatland Mountain Castle) which was in current Marugame-shi, Kagawa of Shikoku of Japan.

     It used Kame Mountain located in the southern part of the Marugame city area, and the circumference of Kame Mountain is almost surrounded in Uchibori in a quadrangle. This Castle comprises a Stone Wall of the best height in Japan and is famous as "the Fine Castle of the Stone Wall". This Stone Wall was made using the early state of the art in the Edo era. On the Stone Wall, a Castle Tower exists.
     The early period of Muromachi era - Motoyasu Nara of governor-general of the Kanto area, the Yoriyuki Hosokawa chief vassal builds the fort in Kameyama Mountain. In 1597 the times of the Toyotomi Administration, Chikamasa Ikoma is given Sanuki 170,000koku and Takamatsu Castle be the Main Castle and builds the Branch Castle in Kameyama. In 1602, a current Castle is almost completed. In 1615,This Castle is exposed to a crisis of the destruction by IKKOKU ITIJOU REI ( Law of One Castle per One Province ) , Feudal lord, Masatoshi Ikoma covered important points with a tree and limited an entrance strictly. He protected this Castle from destruction. In 1640, Mr. Ikoma was transferred to Dewa country Yajima (current Akita Prefecture) due to the family trouble. In 1641, Ieharu Yamazaki enters this Castle in 50000 koku from Higo Country Tomioka (current Kumamoto Prefecture). Marugame feudal clan was formed. In 1643, Ieharu started the Great Repair of this Castle. However, the third lord, Yamazakis, was deprived of his territory because he had no heir. It is replaced, and Takakazu Kyougoku enters this Castle in 60,000koku from Harima Country Tatsuno (current Hyogo Prefecture). It becomes the Castle of Kyogoku afterward until the Meiji era.
     In 1673, it needed time of 32 years, and the Great Repair of this Castle was completed. The majority of existing Stone Walls were completed at the time of this renovation.
