Structure, the history, charm of Ueda Castle

Ueda Castle is a castle (Flatland Castle) which was in current Ninomaru, Ueda-shi, Nagano of Japan.

This Castle was built in 1583 by Mr. Masayuki Sanada who was the principal owner of the Shinano country Chiisagata-gun. As the base of Tokugawa's forefront against Mr. Uesugi, it was built under the command of Ieyasu Tokugawa. In 1585, Uesugi enlarged this Castle as a base for Tokugawa. "The First Ueda Battle" happened. Sanada repelled the military of Tokugawa. In 1600, "The Second Ueda Battle" happened. The military of Masayuki Sanada and Nobushige repelled the East Army led by Hidetada Tokugawa. However, when the West Military which Masayuki belonged to lost by the Battle of Sekigahara, Masayuki was banishment to an island in Kudoyama, and the Ueda Castle was destroyed in 1601 by the Tokugawa forces, and the Moat was buried, too.
 A feudal clan agency of the Ueda feudal clan was put in the Edo era. Nobuyuki Sanada, who ran the area after Sekigahara, was based to Ueno County Numata Castle of the original Castle because Ueda Castle was already destroyed, and he set up the house in the Sannomaru ruins of the Ueda Castle and governed this country. In 1626, the Rebuilding of Ueda Castle was started by Tadamasa Sengoku who was transferred to Ueda country. However, in 1628, the Castle Building was interrupted by death of Tadamasa. Thereafter, the full-scale rebuilding was not performed during a period of the Edo era. Mr. Sengoku was relocated and the feudal lord changed to Fujii Matsudaira family and continued until the late Tokugawa period.
 After the Meiji Period, Destruction and Removing to the outside of the castle were carried out and only the Stone Wall and an West Oar were left in this Castle. In the Showa Period, the two Oars of Honmaru, which had been transferred, were restored to their original positions, In the Heisei Period, the Oar Gate and the Fences were restored by wooden construction.
