    Structure, the history, charm of Iyo Matsuyama Castle

    Iyo Matsuyama Castle is a castle (Flatland Mountain Castle) which was in current Matsuyama-shi, Ehime of Shikoku of Japan.

    A Honmaru is on the Katsuyama mountaintop of the center of Matsuyama-shi and sets up Ninomaru and Sannomaru in the southwest foot.
     In 1602, Yoshiakira Kato who was a daimyo of Iyo country 100,000koku Masaki Castle started construction of this Castle. In 1603, Yoshiakira decided to call this ground "Matsuyama", and the place name called Matsuyama was born formally. In 1627, Yoshiaki becomes the transfer to the Aizu feudal clan before Matsuyama Castle is completed, and Tadatomo Gamo (grandchild of Ujisato Gamo) became Matsuyama feudal lord in 240,000koku. In 1634, Tadatomo Gamo dies in the middle of Sankin-kōtai, and the Gamos dies out. Therefore Yasuoki Katou of the Ozu feudal lord kept Matsuyama Castle. (Matsuyama Castle local allotment).
     In 1635, Ise Kuwana feudal lord Sadayuki Matsudaira entered to this Castle and becomes a feudal lord of Iyo Mangoku 150,000koku. Since then the Matsudaira family continued until the Meiji Restoration. In 1642, Sadayuki Matsudaira rebuilt the Castle Tower which was five folds of beginning of foundation to three folds. In 1784, the main building including the Castle Tower is destroyed by fire by a thunderbolt. The Castle Tower which is still present was rebuilt in 1852 with the permission of the shogunate under the name of oversea ship monitoring to Seto in the end of the Tokugawa period, it is the newest in the existing Castle Tower. In 1854, Katsuyoshi Matsudaira which was the twelfth feudal lord rebuilt the Castle Tower and Honmaru. In 1868, Tosa feudal clan receives Matsuyama Castle and protects it. In 1873, it consisted of the disposal by the Abandoned Castle Law the Ministry of Finance, Department of the Interior jurisdiction, and a castle gate, an oar, a palace was disposed of mainly outside a Castle.
